Konami Launches Update 2.0 for Super Bomberman R

Nearly five months since the game’s last content update, Konami released tonight a massive free update for Super Bomberman R on Switch.

Dubbed as “update 2.0,” Super Bomberman R‘s most notable addition is the 3v3 Grand Prix mode. As the name suggests, the Grand Prix mode pits two teams of three players against each other online or locally. Each team will face off for two rounds and the team with the most points wins. Players can choose between Crystal rules (collect crystals to gain points) and Basic Bomber rules (get points by blasting off the other team) when playing Grand Prix. To keep things interesting, each character will have different power-ups. Local network play is possible with the game’s support for up to six Switches connected to each other.

Another big addition is the Bomber Planet World – the 7th playable world in Standard Mode. Accessible only after beating Story Mode, Bomber Planet World has its own story and new areas for solo and co-op players to explore. If that’s not enough, two battle stages have also been added in the game’s shop: Nine Areas and Critical Path. Each map costs 4000 coins to unlock.

Of course, all of these new modes are not complete without new characters. Konami released the following ten characters in the game’s shop tonight:

  • Option Bomber – A
  • Option Bomber – B
  • Reiko Bomber
  • Shiori Fujisaki Bomber
  • Jehuty Bomber
  • Anubis Bomber
  • Dracula Bomber
  • Princess Tomato Bomber
  • Bubble Head Bomber
  • Goemon Bomber

In addition to new characters, the following accessories are also in the shop:

  • Starry Sky Solar System Series
  • Crab Series
  • Castlevania Series
  • Gradius Series
  • Silent Hill Series
  • Rumble Roses Series
  • ZONE OF THE ENDERS Series
  • Tokimeki Memorial Series
  • Mystical Ninja Series

Rounding out this update are some general tweaks. According to the update notes, Belmont Bomber, Vic Viper Bomber, and Pyramid Head Bomber all had their special abilities adjusted. Punch and kick controls have also been tweaked, along with some camera work. Of course, no update is complete without general bug fixes.
